Auditioning fabrics + Giveaway

I started pulling fabric for my quilt for the quilt along. Although I'd love to make a white and mustard quilt like the one in the quilt-along logo, I fear it will not peacefully coexist with my three messy girls. So I've opted to go dark.

I've decided to use a dark charcoal gray (Kona Charcoal) for the background solid, Kona Plum for the lattice pieces and a variety of yummy Anna Maria Horner fabrics for the triangles. There are 24 prints total -- mostly from the Good Folks line but also a few fabrics from Innocent Crush and Chocolate Lollipop. I love how well all her fabrics play together.

Auditioning fabrics for Urban Lattice quilt-along

I had the hardest time finding an online shop that carried both the Kona Charcoal and the Kona Plum. I just didn't want to have to order them from different stores and pay for two shipping charges. Thankfully I stumbled upon a great Etsy shop called Simply Solid Fabric. They carry more than 200 Kona colors plus Essex Linen. And they had Kona Charcoal and Kona Plum in stock. Sold!

Now here's the really cool part...

Simply Solid Fabric is generously offering to one lucky winner seven yards of Kona Cotton, shipped anywhere in the world! That's enough fabric to meet the solids requirements for the largest quilt in this quilt along.

Thank you, Sue and Simply Solid Fabric for such a great giveaway!

To enter, leave a comment about what fabrics/colors you are thinking about for your Urban Lattice quilt. If you want another chance to win, blog or tweet about the quilt along and come back here and leave me another comment letting me know you did so. I'll let random.org pick a winner on November 19.

** The giveaway is now closed. Thanks to all who entered. Congrats to winner #66, safieh. Please contact me to claim your prize.  **

Be sure to stop by Sue's shop next time you need solids. She does custom orders and has grab bags and FQ bundles as well as yardage.

And finally, if you are reading this post via a feed reader like Google Reader, be sure to click through and check out some of the additions to the header area of my blog. I have a new blogroll that you can add your blog to as well as a tab devoted to giveaways and a tab devoted to the quilt along. I've also added the quilt-along logo HTML code to my sidebar for you to grab if you'd like to put it on your blog. It's all very fancy, come see! ;)

Since blue is my favorite color, I think that I'd like to make the Lattice quilt with blue and white.

JB and Jane said...

Im probably going to go with either Kona Sand, But I love Glacier and Cactus. It might be fun to use a very saturated color, if I don't chicken out!

traceyjay said...

I'm thinking grey and aqua, with maybe charcoal for the lattice... but I'm not sure. I am going to go for "manly," because my husband liked the design!

emedoodle said...

I'm thinking of doing a bit lighter than yours but same general scheme. Kona Coal is my fave grey. Also thinking of doing either some AMH Good folks (the blue/green colors) or that great rich bold blue/light blue print from her Innocent Crush line. Or whatever supporting roles DH finds at the local quilt store (hehe... he actually suggest we go there.) I'm not sure if I'm going to do all the 5ish" ones in various colors or possibly just all one color. :)

Online shopping doesn't make my indecisiviness any better. Fabrics always go in my basket and then get removed, only to be put back in later. I can't seem to get taupe and fuchsia out of my head though...maybe I have to go bold on this.

Lisa said...

Since I'm a huge fan of purple, Kona Petunia and Orchid are 2 of my favs.

emedoodle said...

I blogged this too! :)

I've posted about your giveaway on my blog.

i like orange, too! said...

oh decisions, decisions! I have not idea! I really wanted to do the yellows but I really want to use some of my hope valley... white, orange, linen, coal??? Maybe the whole thing in reverse; prints where the solids go? yikes! Thanks Cara for the chance to win!

Chelley said...

I'm loving melon and marine! There's a pretty current fabric line that also has those colors. I'm going to have to search for it to see what it is.

Tiffany said...

I think I'd like a really bright quilt! Cyan, Pomegranate and Chartreuse would be to die for!

Thanks for the heads up on this etsy shop! A super great collection and good prices! :D

I am really into grey all of the sudden so I think I would do this quilt in grey and something, lol I can't decide what! There would be lots of auditioning of fabrics but maybe violet or sage green?

Elizabeth said...

I love the complementary colors of blue and orange, so I'd probably go with some blues from the Nicey Jane line, white and some sort of Kona orange. Thanks!

CraftyHelen said...

I'm so into Scandinavian style, it would have to be reds and whites. Thanks for the chance to win such an amazing prize.xx

love a blue one. thanks for the chance

Johanna said...

I wasn't really planning on participating because there are still so many unfinished quilts in the house that starting a new one seemed highly unfair to them.
But I guess I could never have too many quilts :)
I love the logo so I am probably going with something yellow (and red in between). And there should be some hope valley on the way so maybe I will go with those?

Irina said...

I think I would use reds... I love their brightness!

julia said...

thanks so much for sharing your source! i'm a huge fan of the charcoal...and when planning a new quilt i always want to include it :)
for the quilt along i was going with the *manly* idea...my hubs still hasn't a quilt and he always wanted one with only one or two fabrics...so i'm searching for a brown "floral"/"damask" and would pair it with some brown/cream solids...
thanks for sharing,
julia

I LOVE Sue's shop - she really is the best place to go for solids!
I'm using the Seuss fabrics from Robert Kaufman to make a quilt my little boy and husband can share in front of the TV and I think it's screaming out for orange for the lattice and coal for the background (although I'd love to use white...it's just not sensible!)...or maybe I should give denim a try? It's different!

Hannah said...

ooh, I love your fabric choices, but I'm definitely still on the fence about quilting along. Thanks for sharing your new shop find, though - it looks like a great place to go for solids!

Elizabeth D. said...

Holy moly, 7 yards? Wow! I was thinking about Kona Coal and a green, but I haven't decided which green just yet. My husband's favorite color is green, and I was thinking of making this as a gift for him :)

Val Miller said...

I was thinking Kona Ash, or Maybe just white (boring perhaps??), but I am going for simple.

Rebecca Johnson said...

if i had a spare sec i would def do your Quiltalong.... the quilt is amazing!! i think my fav.. is grey..Kona Coal.

I am thinking about using the teal blue to make the Lattice quilt.

I hope to make 2 baby size quilts for my kids to use in the car. I have a bunch of novelty fabrics that they love so it will kinda be like an eye spy quilt in the end. I've just be struggling with a design to follow. So for my son I'd love cardinal and for my daughter I'd love either grapemist or bright pink. Thanks for the great giveaway!

Meg said...

Kona Snow, I think for the background, and Chinese Red for the lattice.

With red and white prints for the triangles (Lord knows I have enough red and white prints to do this job).

Carla said...

I am digging the charcoal and aqua. Not sure what else I am going to put with it though!

Simply Solid Fabrics is my favourite source for Kona solids! What I love is that she labels every piece so when you buy 5 different blues you know which is which, even if you set them aside for a few months.

For my colours I want to use Medium Grey for the background and Amethyst for the sashing.

Sudi-Laura said...

What a generous offer! Well, my first response would be bahama blue and midnight, but I have to say the white and mustard are calling my name as well. I need something bright and cheery for the impending dark and cold that is closing in on the North East!

Lesly said...

Oh how to decide? I am thinking maybe grey, mustard and fuchsia.

zarina said...

I love quilt-alongs but usually start on it when everyone is done (or in other words, when I run out of inspiration).

When I do make this quilt, it will be in a lighter shade - light gray and uuum, purple or do you call it lilac, or lavender. Well you know I mean light purple.

Thomas said...

The greens make me so very happy. Tarragon and Olive especially. They are such a part of my ideal world palate...

LT said...

I'm thinking a background of a light green, maybe Honey Dew or Green Tea, and then lattice work of a light blue like Sky and then some awesome purple prints for the center triangles! Thanks so much for leading this quilt-a-long.

Cameron H said...

Wow, great giveaway! I'm thinking of making this quilt for my husband, who loves Diet Mountain Dew, and using the green, red, and silver colors from the can. That would be an awful lot of green, though...

What a lovely quilt along quilt! What a lovely giveaway. What would I use?!?! Hmmm. Mayhaps the FQs of Parisville I just ordered. Maybe a nice rich magenta (berry? cerise?) with that and a little bit of green tea thrown in? ALthough I am currently most attracted to amber and denim solids. Thanks for the giveaway!

Mama Mel said...

I love Kona Coal with Kona Lagoon, so I'd probably use those two for the lattice quilt. :) Thanks for the giveaway!

Jackie Russell said...

Great fabric choices! I'm still not sure what color way. I was going to do blue and brown but now I'm thinking about yellow and orange or maybe aqua and gray. Then again maybe green since that is my favorite color. I can't decide. I'm hoping to get some insiration this weekend at the quilt store. I allready feel like I'm falling behid because I can't decide on colors.

I might lean towards green!

I confess I'm torn between making a quilt for me or using this pattern as the wedding quilt for my sister. I think the latter may win out, in which case blacks, greys, and reds will be the color scheme. Maybe some yellow too. But which shades? How tricky.

I'm also looking at a gray+blue combination - it's very soothing and would be a nice winter color combo. Thanks for doing such a nice giveaway!

Sherry said...

Charcoal and turquoise. Or maybe chocolate and turquoise. Tough call - both will go with my carefully hoarded AMH little folks.

Frogdancer said...

I've never seen Kona cotton before (I'm from Australia) and with all of the comments about Kona that I've read in the past 3 years of quilting, I'd REALLY like to.

The only solids I've used so far are black (shows fluff too much) and white. I'm thinking maybe a light grey would be a nice way to go. Grey and yellow, maybe....?

Getting excited about this quilt along. It's pouring with rain today and it's a Saturday. Perfect quilting weather!

Exuberant Color said...

I think Pomegranate is the most luscious color and would look great with Kaffe Fassett prints. I might put Cactus with the Pomegranate.

I would love to do a Navy and Chartreuse quilt, but I don't know if I have enough coordinating fabrics. I do love those fabrics together though! If not...coal and a blue or green solid.

Thanks!

I was actually trying to figure out if I could make this quilt with a Christmas theme, kill 2 birds with one stone sort of thing, lol! I really want a Christmas quilt to use during the holidays and also want to do this quilt-along, so I'm trying to figure out what fabrics MIGHT work =)

I've got a collection of fabrics to use - prints from Aunt Grace Circle of Friends. It's always possible I'll scrap the plan and go with something different!

What a fantastic giveaway!

(and a great quilt design too)

I'm thinking of grey (something light like kona ash) white and yellow (quite a bluey yellow, not too orangey)

- now these colours are not in my usual bright spring palette, but I'm increasingly drawn to them lately and this pattern would really make them pop, I think?

Bettina said...

I have- hold your breath- never tried Kona! As I live in the UK it is extremely hard to get ahold of, very limited colourways and exorbitant prices- but I love the colours! I searched for pictures of the shade card online, which is actually how I came to your blog :) (and then got sidetracked by the fabulours quilt along). So. If I got to make this quilt, I would go wild and make this quilt my own personal Kona colour card by using the small triangles against a solid (coal, maybe) background, to showcase as many of the 211 shades as possible (maybe even in order of the actual shade card). And the left overs might make a neat spectral 'coin stack' row for the backing.

So much to consider!!

Seven yards? Amazing!! I bookmarked a quilt similar to this that used Tula Pink's Nest line. The lattice part was a chocolate brown, and it was fabulous!! But ... to avoid buying any new fabrics during Holiday crunch time, I may use some Nicey Jane blues and greens or maybe some of my (hoarded) Freebird. Hmmm ... decisions, decisions ... Maybe I'll see which of the two collections my new seven yards of fabric matches better ;) Grins, and thanks for the quilt-along!!!
