Last month, the only brand of tampons I use started disappearing off store shelves. Poor Ted, I made him drive around to three stores before I concluded that the OB truck must have broken down or something. Never did I think the company might be discontinuing the brand. Then I went on ebay and confirmed my hunch. $88 for two boxes. $129.99 for three boxes. Women really like these tampons.
Apparently I do too because, in a semi-state of panic, I scoured ever side pocket in every old purse and even checked old coat pockets hoping to find some stragglers. I found two and promptly put them safely up on a shelf. But I can't bring myself to use them. I feel like Elaine on Seinfeld (sponge-worthy!).
I've been thinking a lot lately about which retailers might still have stock left. Convenience stores like 7-11? Gas stations? Mom and Pop grocery stores? Think. Think!! Where could they be??
And then today while in Target, there they were! A few beaten up boxes (clearly previously lost in the back room) sitting in the old OB shelf space. I nearly screamed out loud. Then I promptly threw them all in my cart with not even a thought. All seven boxes. 280 tampons. $45 worth of "fluid-lock grooves for leak protection." I hope my husband can overlook my madness because I couldn't leave them on the shelf like that. Maybe I can sell one on ebay and take him out to dinner.
UPDATE: Sorry if I caused anyone to panic but it appears they aren't discontinued as previously rumored. Whew. I guess I won't have to ration these tampons or request them from my Germany-based flickr friends after all.

I know your pain. Avon recently quit making the moisterizer I've used for twenty years and I've been scouring ebay for any remaining jar in existance. Only problem is so are millions of other women! It's getting very pricy and I'm getting a nice little stockpile in my cupboard. I dread the day I can't find anymore.
LOL! I will keep my eyes out for them when I'm shopping.
December 27, 2010: To our valued customers: o.b.® tampons experienced a temporary supply interruption that has resulted in some stores being out of stock. We are working hard to bring supply back in line with demand and expect these stores to be restocked soon. We apologize to those who may have been inconvenienced.

I would have done the same thing.
cara, i'm glad that they won't be discontinued. although i'd have been glad to help you out...(hehe...in trade for some impossible to find here peanutbutter m&m's :) ) and who knows, maybe that would have led to ob-flickr-swap groups *lol*.
cheers, julia
you should be getting paid for this advertisement! do they even realize the market influence you must have?
hey ladies, if you can use ob you may be interested in another choice - the diva cup - a reusable cup - my friends and I have been using this for over 10 years!! http://www.divacup.com/ it will change your life and you won't have to ration your ob!
sponge-worthy!
YOU CRACK ME UP... but I totally get it and would have done the exact same hoarding thing!!!!!!!
You made me laugh with the update on the post. But still, I totally understand for I have done the same thing with an item or two.
Hi,
I've bought my tampons online via http://www.theobtampons.com , they dont' have ultra though.
I feel your pain. It seems that my favourite brand has changed the "shape" of the particular product I have been using for 30+ years. Why oh why would they do that!
Gah! I *thought* I remembered you posting about this, and when I saw this story: http://consumerist.com/2010/12/where-did-all-the-ob-tampons-go.html I was going to send it to you. But then I got unsure of myself and thought "well, if she *didn't* post about this, she's going to think I'm even loonier than usual." So I didn't send along.
We all have our brand favorites.

Oh my god you are officially over the top. Welcome, friend, we've been waiting for more crazies to join us! Though when it's that time of the month, don't mess with what mama wants!
Here's some irony. I recently bought a diva cup for $40 only to discover two weeks later that I was pregnant (a happy oops). Now I won't get to test the thing out for a long while. Too bad I'd already opened it and my toddler decided she should play with it too. My husband thought it was some sort of contraceptive device.
Hands down, this may be the funniest post I've read all week!
LOL!
(And in one of those stranger-than-fiction- ironies: the word verification is "menste")
:)
OB is my favorite too (though I haven't needed the yellow ones very often)...
Glad you found them!
Holy shit this is funny!
I think what put me over the top was the official anonymous comment!
Oh thank God they weren't discontinued!!! Oh and did you see that you can request a free sample on their site? :) I'm hoping that by requesting free tampons that means I'll get pregnant soon. lol.
LMAO! Too funny. That almost made me spit my coffee out!
I am the same way about snacks that I find that I really like. DO NOT TAKE AWAY MY SNACKS!
You were causing me to panic for a slight second there... my favorite brand too. Glad they will still be around!
Absolute hilarity and precisely how I would have reacted had Playtex GentleGlide gone off the market. :)
that is hilarious!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I must say I stick to my brands - tampons, face cream, shampoo and use for them for ages and ages! Can't believe the mark up on ebay. Ebay is my go to place where I really can't find something!
so glad crisis has been averted!

Check out the 7th Generation non-applicator tampons, right up there with OB as far as I'm concerned, plus no chlorine used. But stay away from the applicators, because for some reason the applicator often sort of sticks mid-way, so you're squatting there going WTF?
I did this a few years ago with Tampax. I can't get them here in the Czech Republic, so I bought 10 years worth on a trip to UK. Then I hit the menopause! (I know - bad planning) Anyone think of 100 interesting things to do with several hundred unwanted Tampax tampons???
